SCNTQ Grand Questor: Erich Gancayco

Fourteen-year- old Erika Chryselle Gonzales Gancayco or Erich is right about one thing — the small scar (which looks like a third dimple) just below her lips at the left side of her face is indeed her lucky charm. And she has the title of Star Circle National Teen Quest Grand Questor to prove it!
Last Saturday at the PSC Multi-Purpose Arena (formerly called ULTRA); in front of thousands of live audience and televiewers all over the country, Erich bested four other questors — Charles Christianson, Amparo Quintos Posadas, DM Sevilla and Arrhon Villaflor to become the second Grand Questor of the coveted Star Circle National Teen Quest title. (The culmination night of SCQ National Teen Quest was also broadcasted live to the Fab 5’s hometown — Davao, Tarlac, Bulacan and Laguna.)
The Star Circle National Teen Quest was attended by ABS-CBN celebrities like Angelica Panganiban, Carlo Aquino, Phoemela Barranda, Nikki Valdez, Diether Ocampo, Jericho Rosales, Carlos Agassi, "Dreamboy’s" Piolo Pascual and Bea Alonzo, Desiree del Valle and big named stars like Gary Valenciano and Maricel Soriano. The first Star Circle Quest Fab 5 winners Hero Angeles, Sandara Park, Roxanne Guinoo, Melissa Ricks and JorossDavaoenos rejoiced last Saturday night when their own talent, Erich Gancayco, bagged the title in the Grand Questor’s Night of ABS-CBN’s nationwide talent search, "Star Circle National Teen Quest (SCQ)," held at the Ultra.
Erich beamed proudly onstage as her name was announced by the quest jurors to win P4 million in cash and ABS-CBN contracts. She was awarded by ABSCBN president Luis Alejandro and executive vice president Charo Santos Concio.
"It could have been the biggest oversight if we left her in Davao,"€said quest juror Boy Abunda of Erich. "After the auditions, we said, ‘Isama na natin, baka pwede na rin.’€But after four months of training and exercises in the quest, Erich proved that she is really destined to become a star." The other two quest jurors were former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz and box office film director Lauren Dyogi.
Erich led Star Circle National Teen Quest’s "Magic Circle of Five," which includes Arrhon Villaflor of Tarlac, Paw Diaz of Laguna, DM Sevilla of Bulacan and Charles Christianson also of Davao. The present batch performed in the spectacular opening salvo with the first batch of SCQ talents — Hero Angeles, Sandara Park, Roxanne Guinoo, Joross Gamboa and Melissa Ricks.
Earlier on in the program, Erich confidently performed a production number of Christina Aguilera’s "Beautiful," where she descended on stage through a swing covered with white and pink flowers.
The other questors also had their respective production numbers. Most applauded and amusing was the novelty song-anddance act performed by DM, who even stripped down to his skimpy red shorts, paired with tank top and suspenders, much to the delight of the audience, especially his fans.
The fans, for their part, came in color-coded attire to root for the questors: green for Erich, red for DM, white for Paw, yellow for Arrhon and blue for Charles.
The live, three-hour show displayed ABS-CBN’s impressive technological capability to air live feeds from both here and abroad. Desiree del Valle hosted from Davao, where a large crowd was also gathered to root for Erich and fellow Davaoenos and Charles Christianson.
Nikki Valdez led an excited audience from Tarlac, who included even politicians, to support Arrhon. And from the ABS-CBN Middle East headquarters in Dubai, DM’s sister talked to him live over the phone to signify her support to her kid brother.
Aside from the old and present batches of Star Circle talents, the event was graced by a number of big named artists such as Piolo Pascual and Bea Alonzo who sang a duet to promote their first team-up under Star Cinema, "Dreamboy"; Diether Ocampo and Kristine Hermosa who also performed the theme of their upcoming teleserye, "Till Death Do Us Part"; Carlo Aquino and Angelica Panganiban, who did a duet of romantic songs with Star Circle Batch One loveteams Joross Gamboa and Roxanne Guinoo and Hero Angeles and Sandara Park.
Gary Valenciano had a song-and-dance showdown with his talented son Gabriel; Jericho Rosales, Carlos Agassi and Phoemela Barranda helped host the opening segment of the show; and Maricel Soriano sang a poignant medley as the Magic Circle of Five made their farewell walk onstage.
Other ABS-CBN executives who were in the audience that night included Cory Vidanes, Deo Endrinal, Leng Raymundo, Joanna GomezSantos and Jeffrey Remigio.
Lucky Charm
This is not a dimple, expressed Erich in Filipino. "I got this when I was only three years old. Our neighbor’s dog bit me after I poked it with a stick in its nipples. I wanted to watch TV but it was in the way. I did that because I hoped it would move. But instead, it bit me."
Since that time, she never thought of having the scar removed. She has always thought of it as her lucky charm.
A sophomore high school student from Holy Cross of Sasa in Davao City, Erich also attributes her becoming a member of the prestigious Fab 5 SCQ National Teen Quest finalists to hard work and prayers. As a bonus, she went home that night with P50,000 cash prize as the winner of Maxi-Peel Kutis Artista, Peeling Artista award.
"I never even thought I would become one of the finalists because of the text votes. I never won through text. We don’t have money unlike other contestants who could easily get lots of text votes. But I still believed that talent is also very important. I just knew that you can still win even without a high number of text votes. I never expected to be in the Fab 5. This was really a blessing and I used to think that if I become the Grand Questor, that would already be a big bonus on my part!"
She said that every time they were given exercises, "I always make sure that I give my all because I always put it in my mind that this exercise could be my last. I also pray a lot and I don’t forget to thank God."
She also shared that the probable reason why they say she acts well is because of the sad events in the past. She grew up without a father figure. "I’ve always dreamed of having a father one day. When that happens, I would really spend time with him. I guess my pent-up emotions of longing for a father just came out in our acting exercises. And this helped me a lot!"
Now that she has won the Grand Questor title, would she spend some of her winnings to look for her father? "I think that depends more on my father if he wants to see me. I was only two years old when he left us. I never saw him since then, but they say he is still alive. If he wants to see me, I think he should be the one to find a way," she said.
Erich’s older sister who works in Japan, married to a Japanese national, was also one of her inspirations. She said they owe everything to her. "She took care of us," she said.
But the road to being the grand questor was not at all a bed of roses. Aside from the challenges she had to surpass, she had a hard time remaining focused because of the intrigues she heard about herself.
"I felt then that there’s a number of people who don’t like me. They say I am tactless. I tried to change but it’s hard. That’s the way I really am. But I am really sorry if I hurt them sometimes."
Erich says she has changed a lot, too. "I was very shy before. But through SCQ, I can now communicate more with people which is very important if I really want to be an actress," she concludes.
